DIG Diagnostic: Find What's Wrong With Your Construction Books

If your contractor books are weeks or months behind — or you suspect job costing and WIP don't match reality — start here. The DIG Diagnostic is Blackline Financial's scoped review of your chart of accounts, job costing, close process, and catch-up work. You see the gaps and a clear path forward before you sign a monthly package.

DIG = Discover · Investigate · Guide. Built for construction companies only.

Based in Mesa at 4320 E Brown Rd, Suite 103. Serving contractors across Mesa, Gilbert, Scottsdale, Chandler, and Phoenix.

What the DIG Diagnostic is

Every Blackline engagement starts with a DIG. We inspect the books the same way a GC inspects the site before the pour: walk the ground, name what's wrong, then scope the work.

It is not a free sales call with a vague checklist. It is a short, defined review so you know:

Most DIGs take 1–2 weeks, depending on how complete your files and software access are. You get the full picture before you commit.

Who it's for

DIG is for general contractors and specialty trades — roughly the $1M–$30M band — who need construction-specific books, not a generalist cleanup.

Common fits:

We work with construction businesses only. We do not run DIG for restaurants, SaaS, or general small-business bookkeeping.

The three steps: Discover · Investigate · Guide

01 · Discover

We walk through your books, bank accounts, and the tools you run today — typically QuickBooks Online plus any job platform (Adaptive, Buildertrend, and similar). We learn how you estimate, bill, and close today, and what "done" looks like for your office.

02 · Investigate

We find the gaps that may be costing you margin or stalling a close:

03 · Guide

You get a clear scope: the right package, any cleanup needed, and what happens first. Cleanup is never folded into the monthly fee — it is quoted as its own project so you see the cost before you commit. Then Foundation, Frame, or Blueprint starts on ground we can trust.

Same three steps as on the live Services page — this landing is the dedicated home for DIG so GBP posts and city pages can link here instead of only to Services.

What you get back

At the end of a DIG you should walk away knowing:

  1. What's working in your current books and tools
  2. What's broken or missing — in plain language, tied to jobs and close
  3. Cleanup / catch-up scope (if needed) as a separate project quote
  4. Recommended package — Foundation (monthly close), Frame (books + job costing + WIP), Blueprint (fractional CFO advisory), or a pair
  5. Suggested first moves after you say yes — so onboarding isn't a mystery

Onboarding steps after you engage live on Process. Package detail, add-ons, and what's never included live on Services.

What DIG is not

Hard lines — same rules as the rest of Blackline:

How DIG connects to packages

After the DIGTypical next step
Books need catch-up Cleanup project first (quoted), then monthly package
~$1M–$3M, 1–5 active jobs Foundation — monthly close by the 15th, reconciliations, P&L and balance sheet, QBO
~$3M+, 5+ active jobs Frame — Foundation plus job costing, monthly WIP, CFO Insight Report, Blackline Command
Owner wants forward-looking cash / bonding / lender rhythm Blueprint — fractional CFO advisory (alone or with Foundation/Frame) — see fractional CFO for construction
Systems not built for construction Groundwork systems setup on Services, then the monthly package

You decide. The DIG exists so that decision is based on your books, not a generic pitch.

FAQ

What is the DIG Diagnostic?

DIG stands for Discover, Investigate, Guide. It is Blackline's scoped review of your construction books, job costing, close process, and any catch-up work. You get a clear picture of gaps, a cleanup quote if needed, and the right package recommendation before you sign.

How long does a DIG take?

Most DIGs take 1–2 weeks, depending on file access and how far behind the books are. We'll tell you if your situation needs more time once we see the starting point.

Does DIG include catch-up or cleanup bookkeeping?

DIG scopes catch-up and cleanup. The cleanup itself is a separate project with its own quote — never folded into a monthly Foundation, Frame, or Blueprint fee. That matches what's "never included" on Services.

Do I have to hire Blackline after a DIG?

No. The point of DIG is fit and scope. We'll tell you if we're not the right firm. If you move forward, you choose the package with the gaps already named.

Do you prepare tax returns as part of DIG?

No. Tax preparation and filing are never included in any Blackline engagement. We keep construction books clean for your CPA; Arizona TPT and income tax filing stay with your tax pro.

Where are you located?

4320 E Brown Rd, Suite 103, Mesa, AZ 85205. Call (480) 617-2664 or request a DIG / quote. In-person by appointment; remote-friendly for contractors outside the Valley when the work fits.

Ready to see what's actually in the books?

Tell us about your jobs, software, and how far behind (or how unsure) the numbers feel. We'll start the DIG, then come back with cleanup scope if needed and the right package — custom quote, usually within one business day after we have what we need. No public rate card. No pressure.
